The Parable of the Dishonest Manager - Luke 16:1-12 Bible Study Lesson with Reflection Questions and Prayer

     The Parable of the Dishonest Manager is found in Luke 16:1-12. It is considered one of Jesus' most difficult parables to understand because He uses the dishonest manager as an example of how to be. Jesus is just trying to relate His teaching to something we might understand. He is not telling us to be dishonest but using this story as a comparison. 
     In this story, a rich man learns that his manager has been wasting his possessions and decides to remove him from his position. The manager, facing unemployment, devises a plan to secure his future. He reduces the debts of his master's debtors, hoping they will welcome him into their homes once he loses his job. Surprisingly, the master commends the manager for his shrewdness, even though his actions were deceptive.
     The parable emphasizes the prudent use of resources in preparation for the future. While the manager's methods were dishonest, his foresight and decisiveness in securing his future are commended. Jesus uses this to encourage His followers to wisely manage their time, talents, and resources for eternal purposes.
     The parable illustrates the principle of stewardship. Believers are called to be faithful and responsible with what God has entrusted to them, whether it’s wealth, talents, or opportunities. Luke 16:10 summarizes this: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…”
     Jesus encourages His followers to use worldly wealth to gain eternal benefits. By being generous and using resources to help others, believers store up treasures in heaven (Luke 16:9). This underscores the importance of prioritizing eternal values over temporal gains.
     While the manager's shrewdness is acknowledged, his dishonest approach is not condoned. Jesus teaches that integrity and faithfulness in managing earthly responsibilities reflect one's readiness to handle greater spiritual responsibilities.
     The parable calls for wisdom, integrity, and an eternal perspective in managing the resources and opportunities God has provided. Believers are encouraged to use their earthly blessings to promote God's kingdom, build lasting relationships, and prepare for eternal life.

Prayer: Dear Lord, guide us with wisdom and discernment as we manage the resources and opportunities You have entrusted to us. Help us to be shrewd stewards, using our earthly blessings to further Your Kingdom and build lasting relationships. Amen.
