Let's talk about the parable of the "Thief in the Night." It is found in Mark 13:32-37.
Mark 13:32-37:
32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
This parable is a metaphor used by Jesus to emphasize the importance of being prepared for His return. Jesus states that no one knows the day or hour of His return, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. This highlights the mystery and unpredictability of the timing of the end times.
Jesus urges His followers to be on guard and stay alert. He compares the situation to a man going on a journey who leaves his servants in charge, each with their assigned task. He tells the one at the door to keep watch.
Jesus reiterates the need for vigilance, as the master of the house could return at any time—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn. The key message is always be ready as the exact time of His return is unknown.
David Guzik says, "Some people have the idea, “We don’t know when Jesus is coming, so it doesn’t really matter.” Others have the idea, “We don’t know when Jesus is coming, so we have to find out and set a date.” The right response is, “I don’t know when Jesus is coming so I have to be alert, eager, and ready for His coming.”
The overall meaning of this passage is a call to constant readiness and faithfulness. He is encouraging us to live our lives in a way that reflects our anticipation of Jesus' return. We must maintain spiritual vigilance and fulfill our responsibilities faithfully.
We shouldn't be focused on stocking up on weapons and non-perishable foods but on stocking up converts. This is a time to live and love like Jesus and bring people to Him.
Father, help us to be ready for your return by being faithful in our devotions, prayer and study of your word. Help us to confess and repent and, most importantly, to save the lost. Amen.
Mark 13:34 "It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake."
