The Promise of His Return: Revelation 22:12 Bible Study Lesson

As we approach the culmination of history, Revelation 22:12 stands as a beacon of hope and a solemn reminder of accountability. These words, spoken by Jesus Himself, emphasize both the urgency of His return and the certainty of divine justice.

"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done." — Revelation 22:12 (ESV)

The Imminence of Christ’s Return

Throughout scripture, Jesus repeatedly assures His followers that He will return. The phrase “I am coming soon” is not merely a statement of time but a call to readiness. The early church lived with an expectation of Christ’s return, and today, we are called to maintain that same vigilance.

The signs of the End Times—wars, moral decline, and the increasing rejection of truth—align with biblical prophecy. While no one knows the exact hour, believers are urged to live in anticipation, ensuring that their faith remains steadfast.

The Recompense of Christ

Jesus declares that He will bring His recompense—His reward and judgment—with Him. This echoes passages such as 2 Corinthians 5:10, which states that all will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For the faithful, this is a moment of great joy, as they receive the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8). For those who have rejected Him, it is a sobering reality.

This verse reminds us that our actions matter. Every deed, whether seen or unseen, will be accounted for. The righteous will be rewarded, and justice will be served. This is not a call to fear but an invitation to live with purpose, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Living in Light of His Return

How should we respond to this promise? First, we must remain faithful, walking in obedience and love. Second, we must share the gospel, knowing that time is short. Finally, we must encourage one another, reminding fellow believers that our hope is secure in Christ.

Revelation 22:12 is not just a prophecy—it is a call to action. As we await His return, let us live with urgency, faithfulness, and unwavering hope.

Reflect:

What does the phrase 'I am coming soon' in Revelation 22:12 teach us about the urgency of living in readiness for Christ's return?

How can you live with a sense of urgency in anticipation of Christ's return?

What is one practical way to prepare for the recompense that Christ will bring?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I lift my heart in anticipation of Your return. Thank You for Your promise to come soon and bring justice, righteousness, and reward. Help me to live each day in faithfulness, seeking Your truth and sharing Your love with others. Amen.
