Revelation 21:22 Bible Verse, “and I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the almighty and the Lamb.”

God's Kingdom Fulfilled - Revelation 21:22-5 - Seasons Bible Study Series

Revelation 21:22-25 paints a vivid picture of the New Jerusalem, a symbolic representation of the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom. Let's talk about it. It says, " 22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there."

The absence of a temple signifies that God’s presence is fully realized and accessible to all. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb (Jesus) are the temple, indicating direct communion with God without any intermediary structures.

The city doesn’t need the sun or moon because God’s glory illuminates it. This symbolizes the perfect and eternal light of God’s presence, which surpasses any natural light.

The light of God guides the nations, and the kings bring their glory into the city. This suggests a universal recognition of God’s sovereignty and the unity of all peoples under His reign.

The gates of the city are always open, and there is no night. This represents the perpetual safety, peace, and openness in God’s kingdom, where darkness is completely absent.

This passage emphasizes the ultimate hope and promise of eternal life in God’s presence, where His glory and light provide everything needed for a perfect existence. So in seasons of hardship we can look to the future and know that it's not permanent and it's not the end.

To me, this is the ultimate hope of Jesus. Being a follower doesn't mean everything is easy or we are protected from all the evil in this world. If that were so, we wouldn't truly be free. But knowing that no matter what happens here in this life, it's not the end. What's waiting for us is so much better than anything we can experience outside of Heaven.

Lord, when things seem dark and we are in despair may we look to your light and your future kingdom knowing that Heaven is on the way. Amen.
